Understanding Estrogen Dominance: Causes, Symptoms, and Solutions for Hormonal Imbalance

Ever wondered how an excess of hormones can wreak havoc on your body?
Well, let me tell you, it's not a pretty sight…

Your hormones impact so many aspects of your body, including your metabolism. Yes, you heard that right. Hormones have a say in whether you gain or lose weight, not just those pesky calories.

Here's the deal with hormones—they like things just right, kind of like Goldilocks and her porridge. Not too hot, not too cold, but just perfect.

When your hormones are in balance, everything hums along just nicely…

But, when your endocrine system gets thrown off balance due to an overflow of any hormone, it can lead to a whole host of health problems. Trust me, you don't want to go down that road!

One such imbalance is estrogen dominance, where your body has an abundance of estrogen and not enough progesterone to balance it out. Think of it as a hormonal seesaw that's gone haywire.

But here's the thing: estrogen isn't just one type of hormone…

There are actually three types: estradiol, estrone, and estriol.

And estradiol is the big boss when it comes to estrogen in your body so that’s a measurementyou really need to pay attention to!

Let’s take a look at what causes estrogen dominance, what the symptoms are, and what you can do to get back in balance…

What Causes Estrogen Dominance?

Below is a list of things that will potentially cause and contribute to estrogen dominance:

  • Exposure to environmental xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens can be found in plastic water bottles, personal care products such as lotions and shampoos, and in the meat and products of animals given growth hormones and antibiotics.
  • Use of synthetic estrogens such as birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy.
  • Chronic stress negatively impacts the adrenals and thyroid glands.
  • Poor diet.
  • Digestion issues can impact the estrogen-detoxification process in the liver.
  • Negative lifestyle habits such as drinking alcohol and caffeine and smoking.
  • Carrying excess weight. In both men and women being overweight creates and stores more estrogen.

symptoms of Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance can be linked to a number of conditions including but not limited to:

  • An increase in PMS symptoms
  • Endometriosis
  • Allergies
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Fatigue
  • Fibrocystic breasts
  • Headaches
  • Infertility
  • Irritability
  • An increase in the fat around the abdomen and tops of the thighs
  • Difficulty losing weight or weight loss resistance

Studies also show that excess estrogen can cause breast, uterine, and ovarian cancers.

Estrogen dominance can also affect men. Men with estrogen dominance will experience a loss of sex drive, increased abdominal fat, an enlarged prostate, and even prostate cancer.

Tips for Balancing Estrogen Levels in the Body

  • Sleep eight to nine hours each night.
  • Reduce stress and support your adrenal and thyroid glands with proper rest and nutrition.
  • Eat a supportive nutrition plan high in organic whole foods and fiber aiming for 9-11 servings of vegetables and fruit per day. Specifically eat cruciferous vegetables (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bok choy, etc.) to support the body in ridding itself of excess estrogen. Aim for a 3:1 ratio of vegetables to fruit each day, for every 3 servings of vegetables eat 1 serving of fruit.
  • Optimize and support good digestion by increasing good bacteria in the gut with a probiotic supplement and/or eating fermented foods.
  • Decrease or eliminate your consumption of alcohol and caffeine. If you smoke, stop.
  • Decrease your exposure to xenoestrogens by using safe personal care products free of hormone disruptors such as parabens and phthalates. My favorite company for non-toxic personal care & make-up products is Beautycounter.
  • Pack leftovers in glass containers not plastic.
  • Eat grass-fed meat and free-range poultry whenever possible.
  • Avoid conventional dairy products and opt for raw grass-fed cheeses and yogurts instead.
  • Dramatically reduce or eliminate sugar and processed carbohydrates.
  • Move your body through exercise.

Pick ONE thing that you can do to help avoid estrogen dominance and go from there. These are small changes you can make to positively impact your hormones.
