There's an important difference between losing weight and altering your body composition that you must understand if you want to transform you body...
To put it most simply, you can lose 5 pounds of fat and gain 5 pounds of muscle thereby losing 0 pounds of weight, YET you’ve dramatically altered your body composition…and the way you look (and feel!).
This is an often overlooked aspect of physique transformation that people just don’t pay attention to.
They rely solely on the scale, having some magic number that they believe will make everything right, and completely ignore all the other benefits they’re getting from their fitness program.
Let me ask you…
If you looked and felt the way you wanted, would you care about the number on the scale?
Sadly, many people I’ve asked this question over the last 25 years still say, “YES.”
They just don’t get it.
Do you?
Once again, you look and feel great…
Does the number on the scale matter?
Let me put it another way.
You look and feel like crap but the scale says the number you want…
Are you happy now?
Of course, you might be asking, “How can I look and feel like crap if the number on the scale is my goal weight?”
Simple.
To get there, you lost a bunch of muscle (weight) making you more flabby and weak. Your skin looks worse and you just have no glow or life in your face. And, that’s just what we see on the surface…
So, PLEASE STOP putting so much weight (pun intended) in the number on the scale.
How do you FEEL?
Are you starting to SEE changes?
Do people compliment you or say something is different (in a good way) about you?
Oh, one more thing on this subject…and this is a hard one:
When you first get started on (or get back to) a well-designed fitness program you may notice certain areas get slightly larger at first…
Yes, you might notice your jeans actually getting tighter on your thighs while they’re getting loser on your waist.
This is because you’re adding some muscle to your legs - THIS IS A GOOD THING!
But, don’t fret, as time goes on (if you stick with the program), you’ll begin to lose fat on your thighs and their circumference will decrease. Unfortunately, I’ve seen too many ladies quit and run the other way before they see this happen forever cementing in their mind that weight training is not right for them. If they only hung on a little longer…
At the same time, you must also understand that as you change your body composition (making you look and feel way better), your body shape is likely to change. That means certain clothes (jeans typically) will fit differently. You’re not getting big or bulky. You’re just getting in shape.
So, you may have to ask yourself, “Would I rather have ‘thin” flabby thighs and a flat, saggy butt OR more shapely thighs and a tight, lifted butt…even if that means I have to buy some new jeans?”
Long story short, increasing muscle is good. It leads to all sorts of health and quality of life benefits AND it will also help you burn more fat and get leaner.
